Handwritten reflection added by the author at request of Yates Snowden, according to inscription, 22 Aug. 1918, tipped into endpapers of Caldwell's 1866 memoir, The History of a Brigade of South Carolinians, Known First as "Gregg's" and subsequently as "McGowan's brigade." Caldwell recalls that "fully three-fourths of the book were written in camp, before the ... brief campaign of 1865"; Caldwell also conferred with officers of his brigade, and following surrender, at home of Samuel McGowan (1819-1897) of Abbeville, S.C. Includes transcriptions of letter, 24 June 1882, from McGowan to Waring Mikell, and newspaper clippings re death of Gen. Maxcy Gregg, [28 Dec.] 1862 and 5 Jan. 1863, and annoucement, 10 Sept. 1866, of publication of Caldwell's book.
